As you may remember, this time last year I was riding the crest of a ‘Creature Bait Wave’ that was about to turn into a ‘Megabass Tsunami! But as you may also recall, I did comment several times within the Audio Clips that I felt the benign weather had played a major part in my success.
The water remained clear within all of the estuary systems that I frequented due to the lack of rain and subsequent flood water in early 2025, which in turn meant that the number one bass prey item during the colder months remained rampant and readily available – the crabs of course.

The Quest
“Placing something that is looking like, and acting like what a bass is looking for, within a setting and a scenario in which they expect to find it is bass lure fishing encapsulated” is how I describe our quest to hit silver within my book ‘The Lure of The Bass’.

So, within the dastardly depths of very, very wet and windy January, when, as I write this, the flood water is spilling out everywhere we look, and the sea is grey and rivers are essentially a mud bath, keep in mind when you do get a window of opportunity to fish within some slightly better conditions, you can bet that the bass will be feeding hard, and hard on the seabed too…

Confidence
One bite is obviously all it takes to turn a tough session, week, month, or meteorological season of fishing into a successful one. This is why I would implore you to fish with absolute confidence whenever you do get the chance. If they are there, then they are catchable I can assure you, and there is no better lure at extracting them at this time of the year than a creature bait.
Brighter Outlook?
With a lot of planning, filming, creating, and editing to complete in conjunction with the commencement of my Marc Cowling | Bass Lure Fishing | The Definite Guide series of YouTube productions before I disappear to somewhere guaranteed to be sunnier and warmer for a week, I might not be able to fish for a while now…

That said, with the Global and European Forecast Weather Models (here) hinting at higher air pressure, lighter winds, and less rain, I could well be tempted out of my self-inflicted editorial hibernation to chase down what is always a challenge – a lure-caught February bass.

We’ll see… But one thing’s for sure, whether the conditions do remain harsh or they improve, and even if I only get to fish once or twice in the coming month, I for one will be heading in the knowledge that my largest bass of 2025 (at 71cm that you can read about here) was achieved within the month of February.
So remember. If they are there, then you CAN do it is what you need to tell yourself…
Stay safe, and good luck!
