My 71cm ‘February Bruiser’. Yet another capture that has blown my mind!
Did I think catching such a magnificent bass in February on a lure was possible…?
No, and Yes… No, because although I have caught plenty of bass on lures in February over the past 6 years here in south Devon, even if a 70+ was lying in wait, I just couldn’t envisage such a clever old brute expending the kind of energy required to snaffle a Gravity Stick for example.
However… As I headed out to test some Westin prototype lures on this fateful day, with a planned one hour stint tagged onto the end of the session to coincide with the optimum period in the tide, I genuinely reasoned that, ‘Yes’, a 70cm+ bass in the dregs of winter was indeed possible…

Confidence
Clearly my confidence is being propped up not only by the fact that I have enjoyed by far and away my best start to a year, but also because I am armed with a lure that, as I wrote in my previous post, is changing the way I am going to be approaching my fishing between November and March for sure…
Love em or loath em, the Megabass Sleeper Craw has enabled me to consistently catch big bass throughout the entire winter. Furthermore, I do not believe I would have caught many of them if I was using a small fish imitation lure – it’s that simple.
Most certainly, the locations (that I cover in the Audio Clip below) are obviously playing a part, as is my hard-won knowledge and appreciation of their habitat and habits within my region not only at this time of the year, but those bass that I have observed over the course of the season(s) which provides a clue as to what I discuss below – enjoy!

Into March…
I won’t lie, after blowing my previous February PB of 57cm out of the water four times in the month, after this latest capture I was genuinely so contented that I decided not to fish again until it was officially March…
Two short sessions in, and lets just say I have done rather well… All will be revealed in my next post to follow as quickly as I can. The Lure of The Bass – The Revised Edition is coming along very nicely. and is on course for an official release date around Easter time. amazing once again. Still plugging away with the sleeper craw here in south Wales but no joy yet. Hopefully the bass start to move in when the crabs start peeling here and I will put even more time in with the sleeper craw. What part of the tide has been most productive the flood ebb or slack water?. Would love to hear the audio of the capture.
its funny many of the fish I have caught have been when I’m day dreaming or talking to someone being distracted. It’s weird how bass love to hit your lure at these times

Hi Adam.
Honestly, I’ve caught them on all stages of the tide – I think it is the location and the purposeful movement and then pause that is assisting me the most. I’m surprised there aren’t any bass in the south Wales estuaries…
Have another listen to the Audio Clips about the locations – but it’s channels 2 hours either side of low water, back eddying sections of water, and rocky areas just outside of the current that are working for me.
Hope that helps.
