Posting something up on my ‘Marc Cowling website’ has been hovering at the top of my ‘to do’ list for some time – especially after landing the ‘conservatively measured’ 68cm brute below just recently!

A ‘pause’ or ‘delay’ to the retrieve…
I cannot reiterate enough, just how important I believe a ‘pause’ or what I have coined as a ‘deadly delay’ can be in ‘encouraging’ a reticent bass (of any size and not just the big ones like the bass above and below) to nail that surface lure – any surface lure that is. Indeed, there are six occasions when this tactic could be useful to the bass lure angler.

Six occasions…
The six occurrences/circumstances that will prompt me to add a pause to the retrieve are:
- When there is a modicum of lateral current/tide/flow running.
- When any bass in the vicinity are being reticent or generally fussy!
- During the colder months, when the sea temperature is below 12oC.
- During ‘ice-rink’ or ‘flat-calm’ sea states
- In water deeper than 20ft/7m.
- If there is two or more of you fishing with a surface lure, then consider mixing things.
